EMDR Therapy as Depression Treatment

Responsive image

This observational 12 months follow-up study shows that after an integrated treatment approach including EMDR therapy, patients with severe depression had a 55% remission rate at discharge and 74% remained free of relapse at 12 months. The authors used the EMDR DeprEnd protocol and the eight-phase approach by Shapiro, 2018. The study has some limitations, namely that the sample size is quite small (N=49) and there is no comparison with other depression treatments. Despite its limitations, the results of this study are consistent with data from previous studies on the effectiveness of EMDR therapy in depression.
